WASTE MANAGEMENT
SOG is often asked what facilities we have for waste disposal and recycling.
Residents should arrange disposal of any waste through SOG and must not under any circumstances place items into the SOG skips on the Heath without proper authorisation. 'Fly tipping' of domestic waste is strictly prohibited.
Waste paper for recycling - should be bagged in brown paper sacks available from the mailroom and is recycled free of charge. Collection should be arranged via the SOG Help Desk. On Ext 3030 (01928) 513030. (this can include old brochures, newspapers, old stationery, letterheads etc., but please do not include any envelopes, plastic folders or cardboard wallets).
Confidential waste paper - should be bagged in brown paper sacks available from the mailroom (must be marked 'Confidential') and is disposed of for a charge of £5 for up to 5 bags and £1 per bag thereafter. Collection should be arranged via the SOG Help Desk on Ext 3030 (01928) 513030.
Cardboard - call the SOG Help Desk on Ext 3030 (01928) 513030.to arrange collection, free of charge.
Glass bottles/Jars etc - should be taken to the nearest beverage prep room and placed in the glass bins. This is then recycled in the local authority glass bins free of charge. Any large glass items or broken glass can be collected by arrangement with the SOG Help Desk on Ext 3030 (01928) 513030.
Toner Cartridges - Kainos Community will recycle your toner cartridges. Please deliver to Room B132 in the Headquarters Building.
Metal - most scrap metal can be disposed of free of charge and collection can be arranged via the SOG Help Desk. (Note: fridges/freezers are classed as electrical equipment - contact Help Desk for information). Ext 3030 (01928) 513030.
Office Waste Disposal and Recycling
Office waste placed in office waste bins is collected and disposed of daily as general waste.
Other Office Waste - Plastic folders, wallets, mail trays, packaging materials etc., should be bagged or boxed and collection arranged via the SOG Help Desk.
All of our waste is taken to a waste transfer station where any recyclable materials are extracted.
Electrical Waste - must be disposed of in accordance with the Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment regulations. Contact SOG Help Desk for details.
Hazardous Waste Disposal
Steel colour coded drums are available from trade'n'post/stores, (charge applies). The drums are suitable for the disposal of toxic, solvent and glass waste and are colour coded as follows -
Toxic... blue open top/clip on lid
Solvent... blue screw cap lid
Glass... green open top/clip on lid
Empty Drums can be requested by contacting the SOG Goods Inward, Tel Ext 3452 (01928) 513452 or e-mail and will be subsequently delivered to your lab/location.
When drums are full and ready for removal a completed 'Removal Request' form (available from Goods Inward) should be mailed to Goods Inward, Block 7.
When a request is received, we shall remove the requested drums from your lab/location. Any requested replacement drums shall be delivered at this time. The removed drums shall be placed in a "short term" holding area awaiting pick up by your chosen disposal company. All drums should be clearly labelled to comply with any statutory requirements including your company name, location and the drum contents.
Please Note: It is the responsibility of the waste producer to arrange for pick up and disposal of the waste by a reputable company.
