Darren the European 200m Champion now aged 49 decided to have a go at a Decathlon instead of competing in his normal sprint events, having never been defeated for over 13 years in his specialist event the 200m.
Darren opens up with the fastest 100m of the day in 11.62 running into a strong headwind.
Next up was the Long jump and with a very short run up and into another head wind Darren goes out to 5.33m finishing 6th overall.
After a short break before the shot put starts, Darren’s aim was to throw over 8m with the Olympic weighted shot which was achieved, reaching 8.32m! Moving on to the High Jump, Darren finished 5th with 1.62m.
After another short break he went onto the very last event on Day 1 – The 400m! Setting off from lane 2, finishing in 1st place in a seasons best of 53.37, moved him up the table into Bronze Position.
After an outstanding first day, Darren started off day two, with the 110m High Hurdles as the first event! Here, he finished 3rd after hitting the last hurdle, lucky to stay on up his feet! However, still crossing the line with a new personal best of 17.45.
Now things where getting interesting and still holding on to 3rd place with two German competitors closing in, the discus event was next. Darren had a modest throw of 24.13m with both German competitors beating him, meaning Darren dropped down to 4th place.
Moving on to the pole vault (not one of his favourite events) but to his own amazement he does another personal best of 2.90m defeating the German competitor that had just over took him – putting him back into 3rd place!
Darren managed to achieve another personal best of 35.44m in the Javelin but unfortunately again both German competitors beat him, dropping Darren back down to 5th place with just the 1500m left to run.
He came 2nd in the 1500m in 5.09.93 which was good enough to move him back into 4th place.
Finishing 4th in his very first International Decathlon in a personal best score of 6259 moving him up to 11th on the all time M45 UK Decathlon ranking list.
A great achievement for a self coached decathlete who specialises in sprinting. Congratulations Daz!!
