Well deserved celebrations were enjoyed on Friday evening, 15th November, when Octave Design Services won New Business of the Year 2019 at Halton Chamber of Commerce Annual Business Awards dinner.

The firm provides design and supervision of mechanical and electrical engineering services such as central heating, water, gas, lighting, telecoms and fire protection. Since its inception and move to The Heath Business and Technical Park in 2018, the company has gone from strength to strength and has been involved in more than 40 residential and commercial projects from London to Manchester.

Carl Pratt, 35,  set up Octave Design Services after his baby son Charlie, aged nine months, fell seriously ill with a heart condition that needed a transplant. Life for Carl and his wife Alison, who was expecting twins, was put on hold as Charlie was transferred from Alder Hey Children’s Hospital to a specialist in Newcastle. Twins Lizzy and Rosie were born in January 2018 on the same day as Charlie’s first birthday, and a month later he underwent a successful heart transplant, making a remarkable recovery to be allowed home in the March – six months after the drama unfolded.

Prior to the traumatic period, Carl had been working as a contractor in Liverpool but had to stop. Once back home, he turned his thoughts to working out how to earn a living with the flexibility of staying close to his
young family, and decided to launch Octave Design Services at the Heath Business And Technical Park in Runcorn. He linked up with associate Bob Eastburn, the company’s technical director and principal electrical engineer, while Carl is managing director principal mechanical engineer.

Octave has been delighted with the cost effectiveness, location and convenience of being located at The Heath and also being able to use the services of some of the many companies on site including the following:

  • Installing IT – Octave’s IT partner who originally set up systems and continue to provide ongoing support
  • Merseyside Printing – who have printed business cards and company brochures
  • INS – who have set up broadband and telephone systems
  • The Heath Gym ‘Heath Leisure Suite’
  • The Cafe at The Heath – used for business purposes, meetings and also occasional lunches with the family
  • Carl has even used the new on site barber for a hair cut!
